Project Title: Derelict Traps and Casita Debris in Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuaries - 2007 Funding Year: 2007 State/Territory Coverage: Florida
Project Abstract

NOAA NCCOS partnered with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission to conduct subsurface surveys of lost/derelict lobster and crab traps, as well as illegal aggregation devices known as "casitas" in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary.  Traps in sample areas were quantified using diver-tows, SCUBA surveys, and drop camera footage, with additional information collected on habitat and species impact, covering over 768,000 square meters.

The surveys detected a total of 797 debris incidences, 75% of which were trap related and mostly comprised of wood material.  The data gathered was aggregated into a distribution map showing concentrations of traps, with the long term goal of more effective management by increasing understanding of the scope of the problem, and potential actions to mitigate it. Outcomes of the study suggested commercial trap debris as the primary submerged debris type in the FKNMS, with potential relationship to reefs due to their potential to entrap debris.
