Project Title: Identification and Retrieval of Derelict Crab Pots in Barnegat Bay, NJ - 2015 Funding Year: 2015 State/Territory Coverage: New Jersey
Project Abstract

Through this project the Conserve Wildlife Foundation of New Jersey will coordinate a broad base group of stakeholders to scope and address the issue of derelict crab pots in Barnegat Bay, New Jersey.  Prior to proposal, the project team had already conducted research to better understand the scope of the derelict crab pot issue, as well as the need for removal.  In the initial phase, the project team will use use the NJ Department of Environmental Protection side scan sonar data collected previously as part of Super Storm Sandy response and combine that with field assessments to identify target areas for pot retrievals, informed by local knowledge from the community.  Using the more focused target areas, partners will use side-scan sonar systems to locate and retrieve gear during the winters of 2015/2016 and 2016/2017, with peak activity expected in December of each year.  These efforts by experienced local watermen will be augmented by volunteers from the local community for experiential learning.  Pots collected will be broken down and disposed of through the Fishing for Energy collection bin at Barnegat Bay, NJ.

As part of the project, the team will produce a brochure/factsheet on marine debris, as well as a marine debris decal, demonstrating marine debris presence and impacts.  These materials will be included in a public education module built on existing curricula and integrating data from the removal efforts.  These outputs will also be communicated through community events, as well as at presentations to local schools, community meetings, and professional scientific conferences.

Through these efforts, the team expects to remove a total of over 1,000 derelict crab pots weighing up to 40 tons.
