Project Title: Promoting Community Leadership to Prevent Marine Debris in Masonville Cove and Baltimore, MD - 2015 Funding Year: 2015 State/Territory Coverage: New Jersey
Project Abstract

The National Aquarium will work with a broad base of community partners to address land-based litter at Masonville Cove and the surrounding neighborhoods in Baltimore, Maryland.  Over the course of the project, the team will take a two pronged approach:

1) Holding eight community clean-up days over two years, engaging 400 volunteers to remove debris from their own local shorelines and watersheds.  At these events, participants will be provided with materials and information on the issue of marine debris and also be polled on attitudes and behaviors regarding debris sources and solutions.

2) Conducting leadership and communications training for 50 individuals, providing them with the skills necessary to become marine debris prevention advocates in their networks. These trained advocates will help us effect behavior change in the Masonville Cove region.

Throughout these efforts, the project team will collect data on the litter encountered and collected.  Using these data, the project will hold community meetings in order to best formulate strategies for effective prevention and methods to measure behavior change. These measures will include pre and post effort surveys of participants and community members to better gauge the effectiveness of the outreach and communications.  This project will support efforts planned by local and regional partners as proposed in the Masonville Cove Small Watershed Action Plan and the Total Maximum Daily Load for trash recently approved for the Patapsco River and Baltimore Harbor.
